WESTFIELD HIGH SCHOOL: 30
After opening the 2017-18 season with two fast-paced, high-scoring wins, the McLean High Freshman boys basketball team took the long trip to Westfield Friday and grinded out a methodical 45-30 win over the Bulldogs behind 21 points from guard Aaron Bremser.
The win gives the Highlanders a 3-0 record as they prepare to come home to host Centreville Tuesday in their final game before a three-week break for the holidays.
McLean’s stifling halfcourt defense caused problems for Westfield throughout the night, and the Bulldogs never could find their offensive rhythm. Thanks to lockdown defense from guard Lucius Overby, as well as Bremser and point guard Jaz Bisset, the Highlanders held down Westfield’s top scorers while taking over in the second half and turning a relatively close game into a comfortable win. Bremser had 12 second-half points and was 7-8 from the free throw line on the night. Starting center Ethan Hale had 8 points and 12 rebounds on the night while Zaven Malik knocked down an early 3-pointer and was terrific defensively.
Overby finished with 7 points along with his lockdown defense, while Bisset had 6 points — all in the second half.
